On SGGS 20, the Guru says:
Sirīrāg mėhlā 1. Nānak beṛī sacẖ kī ṯarī-ai gur vīcẖār.
Ik āvahi ik jāvhī pūr bẖare ahaʼnkār.
Manhaṯẖ maṯī būdī-ai gurmukẖ sacẖ so ṯār. ||1||
Raag Sree Raag, the bani of first Nanak.
In essence: Oh Nanak! With the boat of truth and wisdom of the Guru’s teachings, the ocean of Maya can be swum cross. Because of the conceited minds, the multitudes of people keep coming and going. Thus with their minds’ obstinacy, they get drowned, but Ekankar saves those ones, who follow the Guru
Gur bin ki-o ṯarī-ai sukẖ ho-e.
Ji-o bẖāvai ṯi-o rākẖ ṯū mai avar na ḏūjā ko-e. ||1|| Rahā-o.
How the mortal can swim across the worldly ocean and obtain peace without the Guru? Oh Ekankar! Keep me as it pleases you, because I have no other one toward whom I can turn but you. Pause.
Āgai ḏekẖ-a-u da-o jalai pācẖẖai hari-o angūr.
Jis ṯe upjai ṯis ṯe binsai gẖat gẖat sacẖ bẖarpūr.
Āpe mel milāvahī sācẖai mahal haḏūr. ||2||
In front of me, I see the fire of jungle burning everything; behind me, new plumages are sprouting (at one side, the death takes away the lives and at other side, the new lives are born). From where they grow, thence they merge in. Akalpurakh permeates everyone fully. Oh Akalpurakh! You unite the mortals with you at your own “will” and keep them in your eternal abode.
Sāhi sāhi ṯujẖ sammlā kaḏe na vesāra-o.
Ji-o ji-o sāhab man vasai gurmukẖ amriṯ pe-o.
Man ṯan ṯerā ṯū ḏẖaṇī garab nivār same-o. ||3||
Oh Ekankar! Bless me so that I keep meditating on you at every breath and I never forget you. As Ekankar, the Master starts abiding in their hearts, the Guru’s followers enjoy the nectar of His name. Oh Ekankar! My mind and soul belong to you and you are my Master. Kindly eliminate my self-conceit so that I can merge in you.
Jin ehu jagaṯ upā-i-ā ṯaribẖavaṇ kar ākār.
Gurmukẖ cẖānaṇ jāṇī-ai manmukẖ mugaḏẖ gubār.
Gẖat gẖat joṯ niranṯrī būjẖai gurmaṯ sār. ||4||
Akalpurakh, who has created this world, has expanded it into the three worlds; the Guru followers perceive His light, but foolish people follow their minds and remain in the darkness of ignorance. Through the Satiguru’s teaching, one realizes the infinite light of Akalpurakh permeating very one.
Gurmukẖ jinī jāṇi-ā ṯin kīcẖai sābās.
Sacẖe seṯī ral mile sacẖe guṇ pargās.
Nānak nām sanṯokẖī-ā jī-o pind parabẖ pās. ||5||16||
Applaud those Guru’s followers who have realized Ekankar, because they have become one with Ekankar and they are manifested with His virtues. Oh Nanak! They become contented with His name and leave their minds and bodies at His disposal.
